These days all the food you need is right at your fingertips. But did you know that 40% of food in the United States goes uneaten? That’s more than twenty pounds of food per person every month. Not only does that waste contribute to 16% of US methane emissions, but it also could be feeding a significant amount of people.
Table to Table is a charity that’s on a mission to fight hunger in New Jersey by providing food to nearly 1 million residents that can’t afford a substantial meal. For the past nineteen years, their organization has collected and distributed excess food from companies across the state. At Bowery Farming, we’ve been fortunate to partner with the Table to Table team not only in a volunteer capacity, but also through food donations. To date, our farms have provided over 10 thousand pounds of produce to the local community.
This upcoming Wednesday, October 16th, is Table to Table’s “Bag a Lunch, Feed a Bunch” initiative, which asks individuals, employees in businesses, and students in schools to donate the equivalent of one day’s lunch money to help their team fight hunger in our communities. With every dollar raised, 10 healthy meals are delivered!
